The skin microbiome – you should know that

Your skin protects your body from external influences. But the skin itself also needs protection – the so-called microbiome is responsible for this. The skin microbiome behaves like a complex biological system. As long as the system is in balance, it can protect your skin from external influences. This is why the microbiome is so important to skin health and natural beauty.

What exactly is the skin microbiome?

The skin’s microbiome, an ecosystem of almost invisible microorganisms, is located on the human skin surface. The skin microbiome is therefore the entirety of all these living things that are on the skin. These microorganisms – also called microbes – include bacteria, fungi, and viruses. The skin enters into a symbiosis with the microorganisms, which means that a natural protective layer is formed for the skin.

What are the tasks of the skin microbiome?

The skin microbiome is important to your health. It protects your skin from pathogens or environmental influences and helps to strengthen your immune system. In order to ensure an intact protective function, the beneficial microorganisms keep the bad bacteria in check. But not only the good microorganisms are essential. It all depends on the right balance of the various microorganisms. The supposedly bad germs can also stimulate the immune system to essential protective reactions and ward off dangerous germs. At the same time, you should make sure that the good roommates don’t get out of hand, as this can lead to skin problems.

How can I support the skin’s microbiome?

Make absolutely sure not to permanently damage or even remove the skin’s microbiome through intensive, repeated care and disinfection. In order for the skin’s microbiome to function like a protective shield and act as a barrier, you must properly care for the protective acid mantle (hydrolipid film) on the surface of the skin. The protective acid mantle consists of the body’s own components such as water, fat-splitting enzymes, horny cells, sebum, and sweat, and has a slightly acidic, average pH of 5.5. It regulates the water balance of the skin, prevents too much moisture from escaping, and also protects against external influences. An intact protective acid mantle is the basis of life for the skin microbiome.

This healthy balance can be supported by care products with a pH value of 5.5. The pH skin-neutral formula ensures particularly mild cleaning and care. It does not attack the protective acid mantle of the skin, but rather helps to stabilize it and in this way protects the skin’s microbiome.
